Courtesy Pay

About Courtesy Pay

Courtesy Pay is a valuable service we may at our option offer to members with checking accounts. Courtesy pay is a valuable member service because it:

  • Protects you from having your checks and other checking transactions returned for insufficient funds
  • Protects you from merchant returned check charges and potential penalties for writing bad checks
  • Protects you from collection agency fees
  • Protects your good credit
What is Courtesy Pay? Expand

Courtesy pay adds protection to your checking account. It may cover all of these transactions when you don't have sufficient funds:

  • Checks
  • Merchant transactions initiated with debit cards or ATM cards (if you opt in)
  • Online Bill payer payments
  • Recurring debit card payments (when you give your card number to a payee and authorize them to collect regular payment out of your checking account)
  • Automatic payments scheduled for withdrawal from your checking account

If utilized, the Courtesy Pay payment is made in an amount sufficient to cover the transaction for a single low fee. If we return a check to a merchant, we will charge you an NSF fee and the merchant may by law charge its own fee for returned checks. Courtesy pay saves you from embarrassment and merchant fees and helps protect your credit.

How does Courtesy Pay work? Expand

Overdrafts on your checking account (including the amount of the overdraft plus the courtesy pay fee) may, at our option, be paid by the Credit Union. A Courtesy Pay fee will be assessed by the Credit Union for each item we pay when you do not have sufficient available funds to cover it. Your account will go into a negative balance by the amount of the courtesy payment (s) paid plus the courtesy pay fee(s) assessed. You will have 30 days to bring your checking balance positive, either through a direct deposit, a transfer from another account, or a deposit at one of our branches. We are never required to pay an item under Courtesy Pay, even though we may have accommodated you this way in the past. We will generally not allow any checking account to reach a negative balance of more than $1,000.

What if I already have overdraft protection? Expand

If you have signed up for overdraft protection transfers from your SafeAmerica share account or overdraft protection advances from an approved SafeAmerica line of credit, we will always first look to those sources to cover your overdrafts. An Overdraft Transfer fee is assessed each time we transfer funds from your share account or make an advance from your line of credit to cover an over-drafting item. If you have not signed up for either of these sources, or if you have signed up but protection is not available either due to lack of funds or credit or your already having exceeded your monthly limit on overdraft protection transfers from shares, we may pay the overdraft under the Courtesy Pay program. If we pay the item under the Courtesy Pay program, we will charge a Courtesy Pay fee per overdraft item paid.

Do I have to apply for Courtesy Pay? Expand

As long as you have been a member for at least 60 days, you are in good standing with the Credit Union, you make regular deposits to your Checking Account, and there is no legal process pending against your accounts, we may (but are not required) to cover your overdraft checks, ACH payments, Online Bill Pay, and recurring debit card payment items with Courtesy Pay.

We will not pay overdraft everyday debit card purchases unless you give us permission by opting in.

Courtesy Pay enables us to provide a higher level of service to our members by helping protect accounts and reputations when inadvertent overdrafts, but it is never mandatory on our part.

Does Courtesy Pay cost me any money? Expand

Courtesy Pay fees are assessed only if the service is used. You can find the current fee in the Fee Schedule listed under the Rates tab at the top of the website.

Must I participate in Courtesy Pay? Expand

You may opt out of Courtesy Pay if you wish. You can do this on your Membership and Account Application or by completing a form we will give you upon request. If you opt out of Courtesy Pay, be aware that if you do not have overdraft protection available from a credit line or share account, items presented against insufficient funds will be returned unpaid and in addition to SafeAmerica's NSF fee, your payees may assess their own fees and your credit standing may be impaired.
